I remember playing it back when it was mainly a glorified version of another franchise TecmoBowl back in 1989, but this game is nothing compared to back then. It’s polished, the graphics are so detailed that the sweat beads rise up on the players faces and are visible as a shine.
Then I hear Ray Lewis start out with the opening monologue and I am reminded again of just how accurate the franchise has become at picking the next relevant characters in the next big game.
Lewis starts off sitting in the virtual locker room between the lockers, suited up with only the exception of his helmet missing, staring at the gamer through the pixels on the TV.
As he lowers his chin ever so slightly, the virtual camera zooms in to his face, and he begins talking slowly, deliberately, and intensely to melodramatic piano music.
“I’ve always been told that…I’m too small…I’m not big enough…I’m not fast enough…I don’t have what it takes. To be the best and stay there…sweat is necessary…Walter and Jerry had their heel’s never being comfortable…I’ve prepared so no one can take what is mine…no one can replace my mind or heart…Lombardi inspired me and now are biggest prize bears his name…I’m older, of course I’m older, it’s the beauty of it…a different level of wisdom…a different level of understanding…a different level of punishment…I want to live long after my records have fallen…long after my rings have tarnished…Do whatever you have got to do to make sure you chase your legacy every second of your life…Prove you’ll be remembered, how will you be remembered?, why wouldn’t you fight for the biggest achievement ever?…LEAVE YOUR MARK!”
My 8 year old quickly cycles through the game options picking which teams he wants to play against each other and not surprisingly he has chosen the San Francisco 49ers vs. The Baltimore Ravens. After all it is the big game today, and these are the teams he will watch only a few short hours from now. When he chooses to play the 49ers, I think to myself is this a sign of things to come in real life later? Only time will tell.
Madden surely has already won his Super Bowl with this franchise as it has become the pinnacle of all video football games today. With so many millions of gamers out there loading the game at this very moment he’s proven his ability to select a winner for sure.
I hear the announcer in game say something about the kick off and I turn around to watch the possibility of a video game predict the future. Or has it already?
